Durham PACs Make General Election Endorsements (Indy Week)

Durham's PACs have made their endorsements for statewide, federal and local races as well asproposed constitutional amendments on the ballot November 6.

Early voting takes place from October 17 to October 27. You can find an early voting site here, and your election day polling place and sample ballots here

Durham PAC endorses a Latina for open City Council seat

The Durham City Council will vote to appoint someone to the vacant council seat, but the People’s Alliance political action committee had made its choice clear.

There are seven finalists for the council seat vacated by Durham Mayor Steve Schewel when he was sworn in in December. His at-large council term ends in the fall of 2019.

Monday night, the People’s Alliance PAC endorsed Javiera Caballero for the appointment. She is on the Durham Open Spaces and Trails Commission and the PTA president of Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet Elementary School.

People's Alliance Makes Its Durham Council Vacancy Pick

The People's Alliance PAC has endorsed Javiera Caballero for the vacant at-large seat on the Durham City Council.

Caballero, who works for an education consulting firm, is one of seven finalists chosen by the council to interview for the job. The council has been down one member since December, when Steve Schewel was sworn in as mayor, leaving open a council seat carrying a term that expires in 2019.

Tom Miller, the PAC coordinator, says Caballero received the enforcement by "a very wide margin."

Power of a PAC: People’s Alliance endorses Durham mayor, council candidates

Every municipal candidate since 2009 endorsed by the People’s Alliance political action committee won their Durham race. On Tuesday night, the PA held its endorsement meeting, which drew several hundred of its 1,200 members to vote. Their endorsements could help decide Durham’s next mayor and three council members.
